Shenandoah National Park

Shenandoah is a National Park in Virginia in the United States, just 120 kilometers from Washington, D.C. It is a long and narrow ridge that is part of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The park is attractive because of its good accessibility, many waterfalls - some of them spectacular -, panoramas and wildlife. The mountains are not high, with the highest point being the Hawksbill Mountain at 1,235 meters. The vast majority of hikes are on good trails suitable for any type of hiker.

The park is easily accessible through the beautiful 169 km long road that winds through the entire park from north to south: the Skyline Drive. Along this road are many parking spaces with unique panoramas over the Blue Ridge, the Shenandoah Valley where the Shenandoah River flows and the hills of Piedmont.

The Skyline Drive has four access points: at an intersection with US 340 near Front Royal, at a junction with US 250 near Interstate 64, at a junction with US 211 at Thornton Gap and US 33 at Swift Run Gap. In order to make use of this road, a small entrance fee must be paid.

The park is extremely popular among Americans and there are several opportunities for recreation. There are more than 800 kilometres of trails running through the park, including 162 kilometres of the Appalachian Trail. One of the most popular trails is the one to Old Rag Mountain. There are also opportunities for horseback riding, camping and cycling.
